Guide to 2024 NHRA Season Finale & Countdown Races: Everything You Need to Know

As the racing season begins to wind down, the excitement and anticipation to crown season champions is beginning to ramp up for the National Hot Rod Association. At the conclusion of the U.S. Nationals, the field will be set for the “Countdown to the Championship.” You may be wondering what that entails or how one is even qualified to race for the title?

Here is a quick summary of how the regular season and countdown really work.

Throughout the regular season, drivers must collect enough points to earn their way into the countdown. The regular season consists of every race from the season opener in Gainesville, Florida (Mid-March) to the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana (End of August).

Once the regular season ends, the top 10 drivers with the most points are qualified to compete for a championship. After the conclusion of the U.S. Nationals a points adjustment will be made for each of these drivers. There is also a points structure change that takes place for the countdown as well.

The “Countdown to the Championship” consists of 6 races. Beginning  at the Pep Boy Nationals in Pennsylvania the countdown continues at the Carolina Nationals in North Carolina. From there the series travels to Illinois for the NHRA Midwest Nationals and Texas for the NHRA Fall Nationals. After the conclusion of the Fall Nationals in Texas the NHRA heads to Las Vegas for a spooky NHRA Nevada Nationals which takes place Halloween weekend. Finally, the tour comes to an end at its home in Pomona California for the NHRA In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals.
